SUMMER
Summer is here and it’s going to be Hot!! After another year of minimal rain we have to make some major changes in our outdoor lifestyles in our landscapes. No worries, you can still enjoy the beautiful Central Coast at your own home. Removing lawns and water wasting landscapes is a start, along with converting your old irrigation to an efficient water wise system. Adding drought resistant plants and succulents can really spice up the yard and finally adding more hardscapes to increase you permanent outdoor living space.
Removal of your old lawns is critical in reducing your household water usage. In fact, your lawn can use up to 50% or more of your total household water. Check your local city Public Works Dept. to see if they are offering rebates for lawn removal. Don’t lose hope, in most cases it is fairly simple to convert lawn sprays to drip irrigation for drought tolerant planting. There are so many native, colorful, drought resistant plants and succulents that actually when established need far less water than any lawn you may have. Here are a few examples of some plants you might want to plant; lavender, rosemary, many natives like manzanitas and sages and ornamental grasses, and a huge variety of cool looking succulents, like echeverias, and sedums.
Turning that old back yard lawn into a useful outdoor patio with a kitchen or a fireplace will add value to your home and increase you entertaining space. Give us a call and we can help you with any of these options to reduce your water use and Create “That Perfect Outdoor Living Space.” We will be back soon with more ideas for the fall.Happy Gardening and Blessings, Mike and Libby
